TPACK is the acronym used to describe the three types of knowledge a teacher should know. A teacher should know their content (C), their pedagogy (P), and their technology (T). The combination of each three (TPACK) forms the basis of a successful educator.
SAMR is the acronym used to describe the different levels of technology integration in the classroom. Substitution is the shallowest form of technology integration, followed by Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition as the deepest form of integration.
Taking notes on Pages would fit the classification of Substitution. In my Algebra 1 course the teacher had a site that allowed us to submit our answers before revealing the right answer. The site than reported the number who got it correct and the number who got it incorrect. This example fits the description of Redefinition. My EDU100 class had us using Imovie to record and present our “This I Believe” statements. This would fit the description of Redefinition. Students using a google search engine instead of an encyclopedia would be an example of Augmentation. Using Ebooks in replacement of physical books would fit the description of Augmentation.
Understanding TPACK would be a priority in my classroom. Having clear understanding of my content, technology, and my students is essential to becoming a good teacher. I would allow students to take online notes. If some students are playing on their computer I would order them to take hand-written notes. I would use slides, movies, recordings, and other forms of media in my classroom depending on the context. Once I have a base I would evaluate my technology integration with SAMR. I would explore cites and apps that allow me to redefine my lessons .
